Business Description/Mission
What did I do?
For my link I worked with a local band HELLO DOLLFACE and their non profit IAM Music. I got to experience both the side of a professional touring musician and a business owner. Lat time I interned for this company I set up a "mock tour" on the southern coast of California, this time I set up and embarked on a REAL tour on the souther coast of California. I also organized a show at the animas city theatre. I got to work closely alongside my mentors as they booked their own tour and see how they tackle the music industry.
I am very proud of the work I did on this LINK. A lot of time and energy went into completing this project. I had the idea for this LINK at the end of last years LINK and I started putting work into to it before I was even interning with iAm Music. The outcome was better than expected as well. California is the hardest place in america to book shows and not only did I go there with three booked but I came out with a show everyday for ten days. Our social media fan base grew exponentially and so did out connections in the industry. Along with the tour I also had another aspect to my LINK; booking a show at the ACT. I was extremely proud out this because it turned out to be a very successful show. We sold more tickets than anticipated we we able to add another aspect (drummer) into our band. We also made a whole new set for this show. Overall it was a lot of work but we put all our effort into it and i am very proud and pleased with the outcome. One challenge I had to overcome was working with other artist. Everyone wants the best for their art and is very particular with their art so collaboration with different missions can be extremely challenging. I found the best way to overcome this is to first see what you have in common, then to see what each person's top priorities are. From there you can PEACEFULLY negotiate a way where everyone's art is showcased equally and everyone feels they have an equal share as well as everyone is putting in an equal and honest effort for not only their art but each other. Collaboration skills is a huge take away for me from this project. Its different than collaboration in a classroom because it's more of a professional environment as well as its something that people place more importance and care in (not that school isn't important but art is close to the heart). Especially as an artist I will be working with people that I bud heads with because art isn't something you can always agree upon because it's not necessarily a science it's more subjective. Knowing how to sort out these issues without necessarily compromising or changing your art and without hurting another person is extremely valuable. I plan on studying music business in college and everything I learned here will put me ahead of the game and be extremely useful in my future endeavors. This summer I plan on traveling to New York to study music for three weeks and further my knowledge of the music industry. The work im doing is so fulfilling and passionate to me that it seems like a hobby but the amount of work and effort I put in definitely warrants a title of work/career. |
