THE HAPPINESS PROJECT
This project was based on happiness. To start this project we read brave new world. Then we watched and read articles on happiness. Once we got an understanding of happiness we did a seminar with parents. We then wrote an essay on happiness. For the last part of this project we made an art piece on what happiness is to us.
Where Happiness Lies
Julianne Marqua
People in the US are no happier than some of poorest people, even with all of our gadgets and money. So where does our happiness come from? It’s important we find out where we get our happiness from because everything we do revolves around making us happy. Its as if happiness has a gravitational pull on us. You can't go to a store and purchase happiness, and you won't find it in anything you buy, but we can find happiness through our family, friends, neighbors, and meaning in our happiness.
The quote “Money can't buy happiness.” may be one of the truest quotes out there. The key to happiness is similar to the key to success; it’s doing what you love not how much money you have! Truth is no matter how nice it may seem to make as much money as Miley Cyrus it is not going to make you happy. As they said in the movie Happy “money is not going to make you happy as well the opposite of that.” Money does not play a factor in how happy we are. Same goes for materialistic items. Some people seem to think the more they have the happier they will be which is not the case. Materialistic items only give us a temporal happiness; it’s called the "hedonic treadmill“ as they talk about in the movie Happy. The whole idea of the hedonic treadmill is we quickly adapt to what we have and just repeat on a cycle of consuming but never receiving happiness from the things we buy and go right back to where we started. In the beginning of the movie Happy they interviewed a man who didn't have a lot of money or anything most of us in the US have and had what I would consider as an awful job. Still he stated he was happy. He was happy because of his family and neighbors he was grateful for everything he had even though it was not much. It was not only he who claimed to be happy but also other people in this poor community as well. Which proves it is not necessary to have a ton of money or consume to be happy. A man volunteering in a home for the dying was interviewed in the same movie, Happy, and said he has never been happier. He says he used to love fashion and spend money on that and consuming wasn't what made him happy it was putting a smile on someone elses face that put a smile on his. After all happiness is contagious. He compares his life to a loan from God saying he has it great and better than any of his ancestors and he is going to pay that loan back but with interest. You can find happiness everyday by just focusing on the good in life. Do what you love don't get absorbed into the money aspect. Shown through almost all the videos, articles, and self experiences I’ve had it’s proven being with people and doing for others is what makes us as people happy not materialistic items. Such as Brett Dennen says in his song “So Much More” “I got some fancy shoes to kick away these blues they cost a lot of money but they ain't worth a thing.”
There’s one common denominator in all the people who claimed to be happy in the movie, Happy. The people who I had mentioned earlier that were happy even though they didn't have much lived in a close community. Then if we fast forward on to later in the movie where they interview a man who fishes and lives close to all his family. When they were all together you could see how happy they are and you knew they all loved each other. They said they all met up at least once a week and lived within a few miles of each other. You can also see how people seek happiness through each other when you go to the country Denmark “the happiest place on earth” they live in a home with other families and when interviewed a little girl said “you always know someone will be there for you”. Another extremely happy place is a place in Japan where they have the record of most 100 year olds and they all are very happy and they happen to have a very tight community as well. Even people they interviewed that lived in Africa and had nothing at all said they were very happy. The said “we take responsibility for each other, if someone is sick we will heal them’’ If you look at the common denominator of all these places you find close relationships with family, friends, and neighbors. Coincidence, I think not. There are still other things that make us happy if you want to look at the scientific aspect of it. Our happiness is dependent on 50% just our genetics 10% circumstance and 40% behavior. We have something in our brain called dopamine and in the movie Happy they tell us how as you get older dopamine will die. So how do we stay happy when these slowly decrease? Well there is something called flow. The Wikipedia definition of flow is “Flow is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity.” You can have flow in your life by doing something as simple as mixing up the trails you go on for your morning runs. There is not only one thing that will make us happy but there are somethings we mistake happiness and some ways where happiness most often is found.
Meaning is a huge contribution to our happiness, allowing us to use our strengths for the better, much like superheros do. I connect this idea back to when I said a huge part of happiness we find from others. That’s what meaning is; giving and finding happiness through meaning rather than focusing on seeking happiness only for ourselves. As stated in the article There’s more to Life Than Being Happy “Meaning transcends the self while happiness is all about giving the self what it wants”. In the TED talk The New Era of Positive Psychology Martin Seligman while talking about meaning and happiness explains “knowing your strengths and using it for something larger then you are” that’s how we can find happiness through meaning. I think the happiness we get through meaning is intrinsic happiness. If we bring our ethics into our lifes it will make it a more standing “meaningful” feeling of happiness. That feeling of happiness we gain from our accomplishments provide us with lasting joy. You know you have meaning from just a feeling and it brings us a sense of glee. Putting meaning into your happiness makes you realize there is no pleasure without pain. The overall message I get out of what I've heard about the relationship between meaning and happiness sums up to using your strengths to enrich others life will bring you joy.
At what cost should we seek happiness compared to at what cost do we seek happiness is entirely different. To answer the first question, “At what cost should we seek happiness?” I would say at only the risk of ourselves. We should never put others in harms way for our own well being such as we do now, answering; “At what cost do we seek happiness?” We may not realize it but a lot of the ways we find happiness hurts our environment and the people around us. In class we each had made a slide on an article we read about consuming. I learned very disturbing things such as people being put in extreme health risks with little pay and even as extreme as leading to death just so we can consume and do what we think makes us happy. When often the things that harm the environment and people don't even provide us happiness only a temporary feeling of happiness. The article “The One’s Who Walk Away from Omelas” is a great example/ metaphor of showing us how we do this. They sacrifice one person so they can be happy meanwhile this child is suffering. I don’t believe that’s right because one person is not any less then anyone else. We should learn to seek happiness in an intrinsic and meaningful way. To find true happiness we go to each other creating positivity for everyone. Teaching future generations where true happiness comes from would solve our problem on the cost of how we provide ourselves with “happiness” today. This would create a happier and less harmful future because what we pay for happiness now doesn't even make us happy. There would be no real major cost if we were to seek true happiness and there is still time to make that change because it is not human nature to consume this way.
Why is though, that people would spend time making documentaries, articles, and books on happiness? Based off of all i've learned happiness acts as the core of our world, its what we revolve around. Without happiness we are pretty much just existing. Its as if we were to live as the boy did in the article “The One’s Who Walk Away from Omelas”. When asked “What do you want in life” a man stated “to be happy” then he was asked “How can you be happy?” the man then replied with “to be successful, and to make lots of money.” That right there is why we need to learn how to achieve happiness, because it is what we look for in life, and we don't even know how to find it.

I would tell them to add meaning to there happiness. When you add meaning it tends to be lasting happiness. Don't look for happiness through materialistic items because that will not make you happy. Doing for others is one way that you can include meaning into your happiness. One way that I recommend finding happiness is doing what you love because thats the way I personally find happiness.
I plan on going out and doing more for my community this summer. By doing this I will feel good about my doings and provide myself with lasting happiness. I saw in the movie happy a man that found is joy by working at the home for the dying. HE said "I plan on paying back my loan to God and with interest." I plan on using that quote to inspire me throughout the summer. I plan on spending more time with my family without a screen in front of my face. By doing this I will create more memories an happiness.
Looking back on this project what has really impacted my life is on how to find happiness. I always looked at it the same as most people, that if I wasn't making a lot of money i wouldn't be happy. Know I know what true happiness is and how important the role of meaning plays in our life. This all especially clicked for me wile doing my art piece, I was really able to reflect on myself and everything I had learned this project.
MUN PROJECT
1.) If another student were to ask me why the MUN project was important I would tell them it was because it teaches you life skills. The UN is something that no matter where you move it will most likely be part of the UN. It is important to understand where our nations decisions are coming from and how we relate between other countries. Understanding the world you live in will always be helpful. However there are some places that aren't in the UN and you may choose to live there and feel this will never help you. If that is the case it is still important for you to understand places other than your own. This project will also teacher professional skills such as presenting, writing, and so much more.
2.) The habit of mind I was most proud of during this project was perseverance. I chose this because I found this to be one of the most challenging projects i've even done. Perseverance showed through almost all my work because it was mostly a difficult task for me but I was able to overcome most of it. Without perseverance I feel I would have achieved as much as I did. Although my work may have not been the best I feel it was some of the best for me personally and would have been achievable without perseverance.
3.)The most challenging obstacle I had to overcome was overall understanding the project. Often times I was confused but didn't want to ask for help. I felt silly asking for help because everyone else seemed to be understanding it but as soon as I asked for help I started excelling. An example of this would be on the North Korean resolution paper I was confused but after I asked for help I felt it was one of my best pieces of work. After overcoming this obstacle I was able to be more engaged and learn more.
4.) My favorite speech was Alexas. She talked about resolution 1c and I was not for that at first but after she went up she persuaded me into seeing her point of view. She covered many things I was unsure of or confused on in the resolution. There was a lot of detail added into her speech which I found impressive. At the end I had no comments to add because she covered everything and explained how it would work and why.

This project was a model of the United Nations. We were given a current problem and had to solve it the same way that the United Nations would. I was the country Japan and I had to find what my countries perspective was on the issue through research. I had to go with the perspective of my country even if they weren't the same views I had personally. At the end we all had a meeting such as the United Nations would and came to a resolution.

Sociology Project

Socializations Lesson
Socialization has taught me to believe people are supposed to be a certain way. Its how we are categorized. Kind of like a store, you put certain foods in certain aisles. Just like how society puts certain people in certain groups. Its hard to be who you are because you have guidelines you have to meet to be accepted. It leads to violence, hate, and disrespect because we can't learn to accept others differences. However it is important to be socialized as we've learned from feral children. Feral children are children that have been isolated from society. When they are brought into society they don't know how to interact with people or even how to walk. Society can be an ugly thing, but it is necessary. We just need to learn how to accept one another. What society has taught me is that as a woman I have to fill certain roles and that I should believe everything my religion has taught me.
What makes a woman? On average a woman will spend two years of her life looking in a mirror. Two and a half years on house chores, three years cooking, and their whole life trying to be a “woman”. But why? Is it because we try to impress men? Impress other women? One in every three women will not leave the house without makeup Maybe we are trying to become who we see in magazines. Unrealistic images in our heads of what we are supposed to look like. The video Fotoshop by Adobe is a spoof on a makeup commercial. It demonstrates that what you see on tv can only be seen on tv. The only way to achieve the look you see in magazines is to be Photoshopped. We are even socialized to listen to a certain type of music. Girls listen to boy bands or pop songs but never heavy metal. Everything we do, we do to be feminine.
Being a woman almost means you are the inferior gender. Woman get paid 64 cents to every dollar that men make doing the same thing. “Often, men mistreat women because they think she is inferior against them. This outlook is gradually changing over time. A lot of women nowadays are starting to make their own names and fame in our society”. Most men will not admit to this because they are the agents (the dominant group) they are ahead and they don’t want that to change. Woman do have advantages as well. We are less likely to be accused and we are less likely to be murdered. The list goes on, being a woman isn't so bad. However that doesn’t change the fact that we are a target group and are striped of some privleges.
One thing I value most in life is my religion, Christianity. It sets morals for me that I follow strongly. Some people stereotype me and assume that I am against gay marriage, which is not true. I look at the bible as a book full of metaphors. That it’s not the story but the message. Man wrote the bible so there are going to be some flaws but I follow the overall message it sends. Growing up in a community with a lot of people with opposing views i've been socialized to respect their views. Some of my good friends have different views but look past that and love them for their personality and what really matters. Religion has helped me in a lot of ways in life and i'm proud to be christian.
My mask symbolizes how I've been socialized. The unfinished edges on the first mask represent the imperfections we have to cover up. I put the duct taped mouth to represent being a target in this society. The blood tear coming out of the eye is to show pain. Bloods symbolic meaning is strength, so even though the hard times we have the strength to persevere. The crack in the forehead with gold underneath shows we all are bright people underneath the stereotypes we fall under. I made a second mask based on what I think it would be without being socialized. The music “Same Love” represents I don’t fall under certain stereotypes people put me in and just supports being a target group in general. The equality signs on the cheek bones, like you would put on game day, represent equality and strength.

Mask Project Reflection
Julianne Marqua
1.What are you most proud about your mask? Why?
I am most proud of the creativity and effort I put in to my mask. I tried to think about how I could go above so I thought about adding music to my mask. I was going to add a card that you can record sound into but unfortunately the store was out of them. As a backup plan i'm using my iphone to play sound. I chose the song Same Love by Macklemore to represent target groups. The card was going to be a hinge and when you opened the mask the song would play. What I have to do now is put my phone under my second mask and the song will be coming from there.
2.Quote the section of your essay that you are most proud of and describe why, in detail, why are you proud of it?
The part of my essay I am most proud of is this “What makes a woman? On average a woman will spend two years of her life looking in a mirror. Two and a half years on house chores, three years cooking, and their whole life trying to be a “woman”. But why?”. I like this part of my essay because I feel like a I gave good evidence and its something someone would want to keep reading about. Im not an excellent writer but I felt like this part of my essay was strong. I really focused on using T.E.A. here and I think I applied it well.
3. What will you remember from this project? Why?
What i've taken away from this project is how I should stop taking my white privilege for granted. I can use my privileges to help people with out the same privileges that I have. Change can start with one person, its a chain reaction. It also made me interested in learning about cultures other than my own. I have taken away a lot more that I will remember forever but this is one I found very interesting. I gained a lot of knowledge from this project and had lots of fun with it.
4. What habit of heart and mind do you need to work on in your next project to get better at project based learning? Why do you need to improve and how that habit of heart and mind will help you?
The habit of heart and mind I need to work on for the next project is perseverance. This will help me motivate myself through the tough parts of the project. It will also help me when I get home late after music or sports and am not motivated to work. I tend to procrastinate a lot but gaining the skill of perseverance will help me focus on my work. I will work on this skill by going straight to work and put all distractions away. I think perseverance is one of the most important habits of heart and mind so i will work hard to achieve this skill.
