ANIMAS HIGH SCHOOL MODEL SENATE 2016
Project Description
For this project student emulated the process of what happens in congress. Each student took on the role of a United States senate senator that is currently in congress, as well as other rolls such as lobbyist, experts, chair members, the president, ect... I took the role of a lobbyist and a senator. My tasks as a lobbyist was to become an expert and an advocate for the oil and gas industry. I talked to real experts and took thoural notes. Each senator was assigned a committee of either energy, college debt, or immigration. As a senator who was also a lobbyist I took on the role of a mock bill about the lower lot parking situation. Students studies their assigned senators perspective on the issue they were assigned and teamed up to write a bill from that perspective. Students with special rolls then took these bills and decided on one bill from each committee that would be amended and discussed at the exhibition.
With these bills we split up into our committees for two days and discussed, gave speeches, and proposed and voted on amendments until they were ready to be voted on during the model senate exhibition. We learned voting procedures and parliamentary pro in order to emulate and have an efficient and orderly congress.
During the exhibition on Friday We gave speeches on, discussed, and voted for the two bills that made it past the amendment writing process. At the end of the night no bills were made into law due to only one being voted on and the president vetoing it.
