Charcoal Still Life Drawing

Size:

Reflection:
This piece was draw off of a still life set up. We based this project around the concept of chiaroscuro, which is the treatment of light and shade in drawing and painting. We also focused learning terms such as medium, value, constant and rendering for a better understanding of what concepts we were applying to our art. A challenge of completing this piece was the change in positioning each day. This made it hard to have a constant angle of light. Overall this project was very engaging and I feel helped strengthen my drawing skills as well as my understanding of art terms.

In this project we chose an image that we took and incorporated it into a work of art. A challenge I came across when working on this piece was blending in the image in a creative and effective way. I feel I was able to overcome this challenge however if my image was thinner I would have been able to do a more effective job. Another challenge I came across was the abstract component of this piece. It was challenging to make the background abstract without making it messy. What helped me overcome this was the bubble wrap and straw I used to add texture. We also added a drawing to this piece which I really enjoyed doing. I decided to draw an elephant because of the personal connection it has to the image I chose. Adding the drawing also helped add a little more interest to my drawing and made it feel complete. Overall I feel I took a lot from this project and came out with a piece I was proud of.

For this piece I chose a an image to draw off of. A challenge I had in creating this piece was capturing what my subjects looked like. The angling of the face of the female was difficult and when drawn made the face look different. I also wish I had incorporated a more creative background. As this project progressed I feel that I got better at using chalk pastel. My blending skills improved in the second face, as well as I was able to pick up colors better. Overall I really enjoyed this project and found a new medium that I would like to work with.
